Frequently Asked Questions
We thought we would let you determine the content of this page by asking questions and posting those that are asked most often, along with their answers, here. To pose a question simply email it to St George.
Q - Isn't St. George
a volunteer department?
A - Even though we began as a volunteer department, St.
George made the transition to a career fire service during the mid to late
1990's. The District outgrew the capability of part-time and volunteer
staff to provide adequate fire and
medical service. We employ
approximately 145 full-time employees.
Q - Why aren't St.
George fire engines red?
A - Obviously, not all fire engines are red. For
example, Baton Rouge fire engines are white. St. George's vehicles are
painted "Safety Yellow." This color offers greater visibility in low light
conditions, such as fog, rain, and nighttime.
Q - How did you get
the name "St. George" ... are you named after the church?
A - We were originally chartered in 1966 as the "Village
St. George Volunteer Fire Department and Social Club." So, the original
"St. George" was named after the neighborhood off Perkins Road which it was
formed to protect and in which many of its founders lived. By all
accounts, the subdivision was named after the church.
Q - How do I become
a St. George Firefighter?
A - For complete information, click on the "Employment"
link at the top of this page.
