The Department Today
|
St. George currently has a total of 8 stations manned 24 hours a day. These house 8 Engine Companies, 2 Ladder Companies, 2 Reserve Engines, 1 Reserve Ladder, 2 Tankers, 1 Salvage Unit, 1 Dive Rescue Unit, and 1 Technical Rescue Unit. In early December 2004, St. George put Station 68 at 326 Highlandia Drive into service. The station was formally dedicated in February 2005. In July 2004, St. George's Firefighter Training Academy graduated a class of 16. Thirteen of those firefighters joined St. George's ranks and three were sent through the program by the City of Zachary Fire Department. Ground was broken in October 2005 for the construction of Station 64, at 17575 Hoo Shoo Too Road. That station became operational on July of 2006. It was formally dedicated on October 14, 2006 to the memory of Lt. Michael Scott Lamana, USN a former St. George firefighter who perished at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. The additional manpower needed to staff that station was provided by a new class of cadets who were hired and began their Fire Academy training in January of 2006. That class of 21 graduated in June of 2006. A second 2006 Fire Academy began training in September. Those 9 cadets graduated in March. Another class is due to begin in August 2007. These additional firefighters will enable the staffing of a third ladder company and increase the staffing of existing fire companies. St. George has achieved a Class 2 fire rating and is considered one of the most progressive departments in the country. Keeping up with the phenomenal growth in the District remains St. George's greatest challenge. From the 1990 Census to the 2000 Census our district has grown at a tremendous rate and we now serve a population base of approximately 92,000 people. All St. George Firefighters are Nationally Registered EMT's. Each firefighter also maintains numerous certifications in firefighting. |
